CAN Technology
SmartCraft's architecture is based on popular CAN (Controlled Area Network) data bus technology, that is
implemented across three independent pairs of CAN data communication lines (CAN X, CAN P and CAN V).
This design allows cross communication among the three lines while providing the high level of information
security required for safety-critical systems. Because of this architectural design, SmartCraft’s CAN
protocol can be licensed to third-party companies without risk of jeopardizing system integrity or quality.
Each CAN line is dedicated to a specific set of functions within the vessel:
- The CAN X data bus carries safety-critical onboard information, such as for electronic throttle and
shift control, that requires a high level of data bus security and access.
- The CAN P (propulsion) data bus provides engine running data and diagnostic information. It also
functions as a backup for safety-critical systems using the CAN X line.
- The CAN V (vessel) data bus supports other vessel systems, such as generators, data bus switching
and environmental sensors.
CAN Kingdom for databus management
To maintain order on its databus networks, SmartCraft incorporates CAN Kingdom, a databus management
system developed by Kvaser AB, a Sweden-based provider of CAN software, hardware and services.
CAN Kingdom sets up the rules for communication, such as designating the engine as the main controller of
the boat's electronic system. With the engine as the main controller, SmartCraft can identify nodes on the bus
that may be causing trouble and shut down the problem unit if the trouble persists. In this way, SmartCraft
protects boaters from any undue hassle, or even failure, allowing them to continue to enjoy their time on the water.
