History
SmartCraft is a trademark of Brunswick Corporation, a leading marketer
and manufacturer of marine engines, pleasure boats, fitness equipment,
bowling products and billiards. Brunswick created SmartCraft as part of an
ongoing effort to develop advanced vessel technologies and advance the
integration of complementary features on boats and engines.
SmartCraft was launched in 1999 by Mercury Marine,
the engine division of Brunswick, initially for Mercury's
OptiMax outboards. Since then, Mercury
has added SmartCraft to most of its electronically fuel-injected Mercury
outboard engines, Mercury outboards, MerCruiser MPI inboards and sterndrive engines,
select Mercury Racing engines and Cummins MerCruiser Diesel engines.
The logic utilized in SmartCraft products was developed by a group within Mercury which has now become MotoTron Corporation, a
Brunswick subsidiary formed in 2000. MotoTron now can offer this technology originally
developed for Mercury Marine to non-marine engine and vehicle manufacturers.
Now operating primarily as an advanced powertrain and vehicle systems integrator, MotoTron also designs
sophisticated engine control and vehicle networking systems, including
embedded software, development tools and hardware, and provides
support and consulting services. MotoTron is the systems integrator
for SmartCraft.
